Chain of Command: Chapters 32-35

NOTES: My brain be a bit fried so I'll keep this short. Despite the six hour writing marathon, I'm still a little short of completion. But that's okay. This gives you one more chance before the end end to tell me if I totally jacked anything up. It will be done before Monday. Anyway, back to the "almost finale"...

Whew! I'm on tenterhooks hoping Cal and company survive. Mason is a rabid dog that needs to be put down...after he spills the beans. The lowlife scumbags that took out the Marines deserve the same.

I'm glad Barrett is okay. Too bad he isn't healthy enough to do so butt kicking.

Awesome that Mrs. Ellwood had the clues in a locket the general gave her before he died.

Waiting with bated breath for the grand finale! Do a clean sweep Carlos. Destroy these <colorful expletive of your choice> scoundrels.

Good ones!!! I like them a lot and the microchip in the jewelry is PERFECT! Can't wait to see how Cal et. al. take out the bad guys. It needs to come down to Mason and the Commandant duking it out! It's good, Cooper, and I don't see any ends dangling with the exception of the ones that are being addressed.

Wow. Great reading. I can't wait for the conclusion. I hope Cal and friends take out the General and all his thugs and save the U.S. a lot of money in court costs. Do to them what they did to all those Marines. Keep up the excellent writing. God Bless and Semper Fi.

What Judy said, in spades!

CG, you're spinning a very tight web; I'd hate to think you feel like you must finish this weekend. If you can put more detail into it, go for it! We'll just keep reading and getting more engrossed ...

The scary thing is you're at the beginning of your writing career; you're only gonna grow better with time, and we have a front row seat!

Okay, enough gushing. There are plenty of nits to pick, when it's time to do so. And I understand, you can't get it all down fast enough, so don't worry, your Grammar Police will help you out when you send us the goodies.

Cheers!

Unfortunately my boss (me) is a real jerk and is a stickler for deadlines.

One of the reasons I want to write so much is to get better and better. Sharpen the blade one word at a time. Thanks again, Alex

Wow, we wanted more chapters earlier in the week and you definately delivered in spades today. Your hard work today really shows I how spectacular this booknis turning out to be. I agree with Judy and Alex. Ready to see some butt kicking and I like how you have the Ft Bragg guys coming to help. Looking forward to how you all conclude this book.

Excellent run up to the finish. The only negative I have is the fight between the two teams. Seems like a gratuitous reason for a fight and a way to get revenge with the general's bad guys even thought TJG doesn't even know that's who their up against. Dropping in with no more intel than they have a assuming general will stick to the rules seems a bit naive.

TJG should have first found a way to pick up the general and turn him over to the good doctor for some interrogation.

I'm still not sure how you are going to tie all this back to McKnight and how he is going to get his in the end.

I don't agree with the fight being gratuitous, I think Carlos has a deeper purpose that will surface during this confrontation. The is something going on here that is not very obvious, or else Cal would have taken the General from his office straight to the Doc for gentle persuasion.

Everyone seems to be dismissing Gower's companion. What if she's more than simply a secondary character? She had to be concerned when he didn't return. Deep cover? Or am I blowing smoke?

I think the Jamaican "friends" will uncover what happened to Gower and TJG will be able to use this intel in wrapping up the loose ends.

Love love LOVE these chapters...disappointed that Moore to the cowards way out but glad Briggs got a small piece before he took himself out...Hoping the micro chip will be what is needed to take down that pos Whitworth...can't figure how you are going to tie in the congressman yet...but I can feel a fire fight coming on....where I fully expect Mason and his murderous crew to have their collective arses handed to them by Cal, Daniel, Trent, Gaucho, Vince, and Karl...I know it may seem like the bad guys got the upper hand...but they just don't know who they are dealing with.

On a side note Carlos I have now read every one of your books and all I can say is that You improve with each book...it is really awesome to be part of your VIP team and watch as you develop into a top notch best selling author.

Karen Lee, I agree with you. I, too, love all Carlos' novels and he has grown exponentially. Aren't you sorry the story is ending? I am so worried about the dirty dealings and unethical, evilness against our honor bound team who plays by the rules.

To the rest of the team, I really enjoy all the insightfulness and thought that goes with it. Keep reading and promoting Carlos Cooper and his unique writing style.

To Carlos, thank you so much for letting us take this journey.

Glad Moore is dead. But like others have said I wish he hadn't taken the easy way out. I'm worried about the tricks Mason has in store for Cal and the guys. Hope they get their assets handed to them! Love the microchip in the necklace!! Can't wait to see how you wrap this up.

I'm traveling, and l read these chapters at a roadside diner. Two scenes kept coming back to me as l traveled north on 81. The first was at the Ellwood home with Daniel and Moore. Mr. Cooper, you may wish to call Daniel's new book, Implode. That is first word that came to my mind as Moore re-entered the library/ office as he saw Daniel's eyes. I could see the "dark" side of this warrior. Daniel' s "prayer" over Moore's dead body tells the reader about Daniel's other side. I love this scene!
The second was the Cal vs Mason scene. This whole idea is a masterpiece. How do you come up with ideas like this?
This is a GREAT novel.

G.Younger, Daniel does seem to be quite adept at spotting and neutralizing threats. I agree with you about his dark side and how he is able to channel and control it. It reminds me of an old Norse saying, "Compassion for my enemies", loosely translated from "May those I am about to kill in battle die a swift and honorable death". I think we are just starting to find out how deep the river of inspiration runs in Carlos' mind. I am looking forward to many years of enjoyment from his stories!

Mason can have all the tricks he wants up his sleeve. There is nothing that can match a well-trained squad of Marines when it comes to small unit tactics. No matter what Mason throws at them, they will improvise, overcome and adapt! Somehow, I do not think that the Commandant will get his shot at Mason. It will be more fitting that it comes from Cal. Good to see that it was Diane that made the locket connection; once Neil downloads the chip, the jig will be up. Everything has come together quite nicely, all the transitions have been very smooth and the characters have become more than just parts of the story. You make us care deeply about what has happened to everyone connected with this story. When a writer is able to do that as consistently as you have, he has shown he is indeed becoming a master at his craft. Carlos, we don't read your books and become so involved in the story lines because we are bored and have nothing to do. We read them and get our friends to read them because they are so damn good, it hurts to put them down. Finish it up and we will keep that stickler boss off your back!

Don, you summed up superbly. I bet most of us gave Carlos' books as gifts and have promoted him on our social media avenues. What can one do to thank one who has done soooo much for others. Maybe we should send our politicians these novels. Lol

I always enjoy reading your comments. You are so thorough. Keep reading and posting.

Don, I agree with you post with the exception of the first three sentences. If TJG plays by the rules and the Mason group does not it could go very bad for TJG. Well trained Marines, SEALs, Force Recon, no matter who it is, if Mason mined the area, has listening devices and is using high tech in violation of rules, etc.; realistically TJG wouldn't have much of a chance. Mason probably has the LZ under direct observation and his people ready to attack immediately. From the story line it appears to be the best, and most obvious, in the area.

We all know the good guys are going to win, but at what cost and would they have much of a chance against Mason in reality considering what a low life he is and he only plays by his rules.

Vin, I understand your concerns about the rules and yes Mason could go high tech. Hell, he could have shot the Osprey down and eliminated the whole crew. But where did you get the idea that Cal was going to play by the rules? He knows what he is going up against and, like any good commander, he will have several surprises up his sleeve. Despite what the politicians want folks to believe, there are no rules in combat between two military forces. You kill them before they kill you. Cal knows that Mason has the tactical advantage, by the fact that it is Mason's "area of operations" and Mason's troops are in place. He also knows that Mason will not hesitate to bend the rules at every opportunity. The last minute addition of the two Delta troops will have some interesting consequences, if I know Carlos. Remember that Mason is also subject to the "fog of war" and the fact that all plans are usually OBE (overtaken by events). I still feel that Cal and the team will maintain the tactical advantage, but I am not foolish enough to think that it will be without consequences. Carlos is a realist and we might be due for the loss of another team member. I can tell by everyone's comments that this story has affected us all very deeply, which shows how much Carlos has grown as a writer. Go back and look at the comments in the first Novels Live story lines and compare them to this latest one. This is why, even though we have read the story here (some of us also Beta reading it) then we virtually all go out and buy it as soon as it is published.

Vin

Don, I think that this is a topic more related to how we perceive the characters in these stories. I see Cal as a man of honor who would not agree to a set of rules unless he were going to stick to those rules. He may have surprises but I see him staying within the bounds of the rules as agreed to. Cal's sense of honor and self respect would allow nothing less.

On the other hand I see Mason with no honor but the desire to make his opponents suffer before losing and going out of his way to make sure his opponent knows he has lost before he dies. Shooting down the Osprey would not be in that interest. That, in my mind, is why he wouldn't shoot the Osprey down as it came into the LZ but why he would break each and every rule he set as part of this "game" to make sure he wins.

The fact that we have discussions about these characters should indicate to all of us how involved we get in these stories and how much we "feel" the characters are real people we know. As have others, I've read all of Coopers books and even as part of this group I still buy the entire books as soon as they are released.

He just keeps getting better and better.

I know my saying this is getting old but great chapters once again. We are all enjoying the front row seats that we have in the writing of another great story. As much as I don't want to get to the end, I can't wait to see how Cal and Co. are going to deal with the bad guys and I liked the chip in the necklace and can't wait to see what's on it.
Thank you for inviting us in to the process!

'Carlos,

Many years ago I had the honor to meet and speak with Isaac Asimov, one of the most prolific and creative Science Fiction writers who ever lived.

One of the things I told him about why I keep reading what he writes is that reading his books feels like having him in the room with me, telling me the story!

Carlos, you've got that gift. Everybody comments on how you pull us in to your story, your novels, and in numerous ways, they're telling you that this is why they continue to read whatever you write.

I said before that it's almost scary to think that you're still at the beginning of your writing career. Maybe scary is the wrong word to use; amazing is better.

Now, if you can get your boss to back off a bit and let you finish writing at the pace necessary to wrap this all up, you will have created yet another masterpiece.

Thanks for an incredible ride.

Cheers,
-a.

I really enjoy this group and how we look at the books that Cooper writes and how we relate to the characters.

I agree with much of what is written and find ways of thinking at things that I had not thought of before. I am between Don and Vin. I think that Cal is about honor but he also knows that sometimes you have to play hardball which might mean not following the rules.

I'm patiently waiting to see how Cooper resolves this for all of us.
